After cruising on Lake Achensee for almost 60 years, the 31-metre-long ship was taken out of service and converted into an outdoor play paradise. Do your children love playing pirates? There is a play tower, suspension bridge, bird’s nest tree and climbing net for young adventurers to explore. In addition, a low ropes course, swing set, seesaw and flying fox offer plenty of opportunities for kids to let off some steam. In its original meaning, an atoll is a ring-shaped coral island. The architecture of the Atoll Achensee resembles a drop of water, and its fluid design blends perfectly with the lakeshore near the Buchau bathing beach. This drop shape represents the smallest part of Lake Achensee’s large water volume and is the basic design element from the layout to the curved and sinuous form of the facade to the roof silhouette. Built with lots of glass and light-coloured wood, the top-modern facility was harmoniously integrated into the lakeside landscape of the district Buchau in Maurach. The individual "experience islands" are laid out in a ring-shaped structure – hence the name Atoll. Through the entire building the circular design continues – from the lamps, tables, and seating areas to the information desks. A great importance was attached to the careful integration into the sensitive environment of the lakeside. The sustainable energy concept of the building is exemplary: The energy for the entire facility is produced 100% carbon-neutral through heat pumps using water from a deep well, and therefore the Atoll Achensee also sets a benchmark for ecological sustainability in the region.
