Where you have the slopes (almost) to yourself!

Skiing in Steinberg am Rofan

You might be a bit dubious about riding this lift at first. The signs at the bottom advise "50 percent grade" and "ride in pairs as an exception". Ten minutes later, after an elevation gain of 300 metres, you have mastered your first ride on the Achensee region’s steepest drag lift. Steinberg am Rofan lies 10 kilometres from the northern shore of Lake Achensee at an elevation of 1,015 metres. While the idyllic village is a widely known cross-country skiing destination, it is still an insider tip for downhill skiers, attracting mainly the locals.

In the high season, the ski area is popular among families looking for some relaxed turns on quiet slopes away from the busy ski area Christlum in Achenkirch. Although the ski area is quite small, there are plenty of places to stop for refreshments. The Liftstüberl is great for grabbing a snack, and at the Silberwaldhütte hungry skiers can refuel with a huge variety of specialties in a cozy mountain hut ambience. Visitors should not miss the Waldhäusl, a quaint inn that entices guests with excellent local cuisine and a romantic toboggan run right behind the house. Please check opening hours of restaurants, mountains huts and inns in advance.
